Drift Ice, Shiretoko, Hokkaido

According to observations by Shiretoko Museum and Shiretoko Nature Foundation, the first drift ice in 2024 reached the Shiretoko area on January 30 and disappeared on April 5th. Kamimura recorded the sounds of the floating ice at some points of Utoro in Shiretoko, where Kamimura had done every winter.

In his opinion, the ice this year felt more robust and firmer than in the last few years, even though global warming affects it every year. Also, some locals who often observe the ice condition every winter say this year was fruitful.
Kamimura explored the ice fields day and night, especially on the full moon day, which causes spring tide.
