Drift Ice, Shiretoko, Hokkaido

Drift ice’s ocean changes daily depending on weather conditions, wind, temperature, and waves. Because the Shiretoko peninsula shapes a curve geographically, this floating ice easily gets stuck there. When there is a lot of ice to dam the waves, the ocean is quiet like a mirror. Conversely, it makes powerful waves when the ice is negligible.

Hong Kong cinematographer Colleen Kwok visited Shiretoko to film three people working alongside this fickle seasonal ice's life. Kamimura is one of them, and they did fieldwork on the ice together. The documentary film "Melting and muted: the vanishing drift ice off Japan’s Shiretoko peninsula” introduces the coexistence of the people and ecological stories of the ice with the drift ice shown in the South China Morning Post.
